RIF Multicultural Booklist
|
Great news from my publisher Lee & Low Books. My best-selling, award-winning picture book Bein' With You This Way has
made the 2011 Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) Multicultural Booklist,
Grades K-4. The booklist, sponsored by Macy's, contains an impressive
assortment of multicultural books, representing American Indian, African
American, Hispanic themes as well as selections from additional culture
groups. RIF will donate more 580 multicultural children's book
collections to elementary school classrooms in low-income communities
throughout the United States.

A performer at heart, I've developed a unique style of telling
stories. I often enhance the "reading" of a book with a simple
prop. I read Leo Lionni's Inch by Inch using a small glove. I read Arnold Lobel's The Book of Pigericks using a pig disguise. I cut loose on Bill Martin, Jr.'s Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See? accompanied by a blues harmonica. You'll find short vignettes of me at a school in a Chicago suburb "reading" from several popular picture books: from my book Bein' With You This Way, from Bill Martin, Jr.'s Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See? and from Chris Raschka's Yo Yes! You can also find these on YouTube, just search under my name.

Audio Recordings of My Books
|
Another project of mine involves making audio recordings of my published work. This project was motivated by the many teachers who've told me that I should record my stories, especially since I sing most of them. This got me to thinking and earlier this year I did just that, I recorded a dozen of my stories using a digital audio program both to record the story and to build an underlying sound scape to accompany it. If you're interested in obtaining a CD, please email me for details. Meanwhile, click one of the links below to listen to an audio sample.

| Below you'll find an audio recording of one of my most popular books, Shake Dem Halloween Bones. Actually, you'll find two recordings: the first one is a response to the book by a father and his two kids (performing under the name Big Sweetie and the Kittens); the second one is by me.

Below you'll find a link to a pdf. file for a downloadable bookmark. Whether or not I'll be coming to your school as a visiting author, feel free to download this bookmark for your students' use. For best results, print the page on a heavier card stock. If you have any problems downloading the pdf. file, please don't hesitate to email me.
