Background and Description

When you see a farm book of mine it's usually because I'm thinking of growing up in a small town in southern Texas. It was not much of a town when I lived there; a dusty cattle town (the head of the King Ranch, the largest ranch in the world, was just down the road). But, boy, did I have fun with my friends exploring nature.

In Summer Sun Risin' I focus on a father and son going through their daily summer chores. And I do so using the form of a lullaby. Yes, I sing the book very slowly as if I were putting a child to sleep (which, of course, is where the story ends). Here, try singing the first few lines:

Rug on the floor,
   light on the wall.
Ma bt the bed,
   Pa in the hall.

Dog at the door,
   cat on a chair.
Summer sun's tastin'
   the sweet, sweet air.
